MusicTown returns in a brand-new format to pay homage to one of Dublin’s greatest music icons, Philip Lynott. Taking place in various locations across Dublin, the programme will feature screenings, live concerts, discussion events and a four-day exhibition reflecting on the life and times of the late Thin Lizzy singer and renowned solo artist.
The first round of announcements includes a four-day exhibition at Studio 10 on Wicklow Street Dublin entitled Lost Love of Romeo featuring contributions from Thin Lizzy artist Jim Fitzpatrick, famed rock & roll photographer Chalkie Davies, renowned photo-journalist Eric Luke, as well as Philip’s childhood friend Michael O’Flanagan who presents live footage of his first band The Black Eagles, alongside personal ephemera and fan memorabilia. The exhibition will be on from Thursday October 1st – Sunday October 4th.
Philio-Sophy Talks is a series of discussion panels curated by Irish music management legend and friend of Philip’s, Fachtna O’Ceallaigh (Sinead O’Connor, Boomtown Rats). Young, Gifted, Gorm & Gaelach featuring acclaimed Irish writer Emma Dabiri and award-winning poet Maureen Onwunali will reflect on Philip’s life as a mixed-race man growing up in 1960s Dublin, how his blackness has influenced his art and acted a beacon for future generations of Irish artists of colour. There will also be a panel of unheard and unseen live music and documentary footage entitled Look What the Wind Just Blew In that will surprise and delight Philo anoraks. And a discussion Vagabond of the Western World hosted by social historian and podcaster Donal Fallon with Philip’s close compadre and Thin Lizzy art director Jim Fitzpatrick and Horslips legend Eamon Carr. Glasshouse have assembled a diverse collection of young Irish vocalists and musicians to present Old Town – The Songs of Philip Lynott on the main stage at the National Concert Hall focusing on Philo’s two solo albums, and selections from the softer side of Thin Lizzy. Tickets are priced €25 and available from 11th Sep from www.nch.ie.
Additionally, the Irish Film Institute are hosting a screening of Emer Reynolds' brilliant documentary Philip Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away and a live interview with comedian Killian Sunderman who just happens to be a Thin Lizzy fanatic.
