Motorist recorded driving 139km/h in 100 zone in Co Kildare

A motorist was recorded driving 139km/h in a 100 zone in Johnstown in Co Kildare on Thursday.

This speed, on the N7 Palmerstown, was one of 760 drivers caught speeding so far as part of a policing operation during the bank holiday weekend.

Other high speeds included a driver speeding 117km/h in a 80km/h zone on the N2 Knockronaghan, Emyvale, Co. Monaghan.

Another motorist was caught driving 114km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Navan Road, Dublin 15, while another was driving 90km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R474 Mahonburgh, Kilmaley, in Co. Clare.

20 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Over 90 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 108.
